AI SIEM vs Traditional SIEM: What Actually Changes

ClaireChains ·

A traditional SIEM matches events against rules written in advance. An AI SIEM also investigates: it gathers context, tests hypotheses and reaches a verdict for each alert. The result is fewer false positives and faster triage, provided every AI decision stays explainable and auditable.

Where traditional SIEMs struggle

Rules are precise but brittle. Attackers who know common detection rules change their technique just enough to avoid them. At the same time, broad rules fire on harmless activity, and analysts spend their day closing alerts that were never threats. Thousands of alerts a day, a small share of them real, is a common picture.

What the AI adds

Claire Security investigates each alert the way an experienced analyst would. It observes the event, forms a hypothesis, gathers evidence from connected systems and reaches a conclusion. Its models are trained on security data, not general text, so they understand lateral movement, credential theft, data exfiltration and command and control traffic.

In our six-month measurement, this made triage ten times faster and cut false positives by 90% for the same SOC team.

What to watch for

  • Black boxes. If the AI cannot show why it closed or escalated an alert, you cannot defend the decision to an auditor. Ask for the reasoning chain.
  • Data leaving your network. Some AI features send alerts to an outside model. See on-premise AI SIEM for why that matters.
  • Generic models. A general-purpose model wrapped with security prompts is not the same as a model trained for security. Our article on custom AI models for cybersecurity explains the difference.

When a traditional SIEM is enough

A small environment with low alert volume and a stable set of known threats can run well on rules alone. Once alert volume outgrows your team, or you need 24/7 coverage without adding headcount, an AI SIEM pays off.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI SIEM?

An AI SIEM collects and correlates security events like a traditional SIEM, but uses AI models to investigate alerts: it gathers context, reasons about what happened and recommends or takes action. The goal is fewer false positives and faster triage than static rules alone.

Does an AI SIEM replace correlation rules?

Not entirely. Rules remain useful for known, well-defined threats and compliance checks. AI adds investigation and pattern recognition on top, which catches threats that do not match a rule and filters out alerts that do but are harmless.

Can AI SIEM decisions be audited?

They should be. Claire Security stores the full reasoning chain for each alert: what it observed, which hypothesis it tested, what evidence it gathered and how it concluded. Analysts and auditors can review every step.
